What are
"intelligent" technologies?
"Intelligent"
technology is cross-fertilized from fields such as neuroscience and cognitive science. It provides the tools to create an autonomous design with memory
(experience), which based on this experience can reason, plan and
adjust.
In terms of engineering it means having a
design which can handle unforeseen scenarios. This does not only
imply that it is not necessary to model in advance the many possible
operational uses and failure modes, but also that unknown data,
statistical variance and non-linearities can be handled better by
the system.
"Intelligent" technologies can be
applied for dynamics control, active safety, advanced sensors, mechatronics, diagnostics,
prognostics, design optimizations, knowledge management and more.
What will be important issues with "intelligent" technology?
-
If the
proven systems engineering methods are not evolved accordingly, the emergent properties of "intelligent" technology will lead to a new class of safety and quality
issues
-
The human controller must not only always remain in control, but the operator should be able to decide the level of autonomous "intelligent" control
-
Customer acceptance (for example of active safety for roadcars to avoid accidents) will require proven statistical proof of the increased safety
