This is not a future vision. Many exciting new possibilities for industry to accelerate technology development are available NOW.
But the foundations for successful new products are laid early. Key is to understand the new technologies that need to be implemented to meet raised customer and market demands and to have a thorough design concept phase to think through the effects and implications of implementing these technologies.
Consider for example: the latest developments with M2M communication, wireless adhoc sensor networks, "intelligent" technology, the linking of information ("semantic web") and so forth. The immediate technology integration issues will be clear, but one must look further, such as:
The human manager should never be taken out of the tactical/strategic loop
Companies need to be organised in differently to take advantage of these new technologies (become fully integrated, for example)
The data will need to be collected, processed and presented in standard ways (new operational, tactical, strategic, "meta" metrics)
How will the information degrade over time with sensor wear and tear, less strict adherence to setup procedures, less disciplined filtering and correcting of data, the knowledge of original designers leaving with them when they leave the company?
....and numerous other similar considerations
one must analyze from the very beginning
